MACHINE QUILTING SERVICE:

Pricing: All prices are GST inclusive.

There is a minimum charge of $50 per quilt for edge to edge or $100 for custom.

Standard edge to edge: $5.00 per square foot.

Dense edge to edge: $6.00-$7.00 per square foot.

Edge-to-edge (E2E) or pantograph is when the quilting is sewn in rows from one side of the quilt to the other until completed.

Custom quilting: price as per discussion when booking in your quilt.

Custom Quilting is quilting that is not edge-to-edge. It consists of computer or free motion quilting and can be either regular or show quality.

Basting one direction: $2.50 per square foot.

Basting both directions: $3.50 per square foot plus $20 turning fee.

Turning fee $20: This fee is for unloading, trimming if needed and reloading the quilt for borders.

Centring pieced backing fee $20: Please note we do our best to centre accurately however, the quilt may move during quilting. Centring from top to bottom isn’t always accurate due to the top and bottom rollers moving at different paces.

Quilt preparation fee: $25 per hour (this fee is waived if your quilt is prepared in accordance with the quilt preparations listed below).

CALCULATING YOUR QUILTING COST:

  1. Multiply your quilt width by your quilt length. Example: 50” x 50” =2,500 square inches.
  2. Divide the square inches by 144   2,500 ÷ 144 =17 square feet.
  3. Multiply square feet by the price   17 x $5.00=$85.00

WADDING:

  • Matilda's Own 100% cotton 240cm/95 inches wide. $25.00 per metre.
  • Matilda’s Own 100% cotton 150cm/60” wide. $17.00 per metre.
  • Matilda’s Own 100% wool 300cm/120” wide. $36.00 per metre.

Binding:

Note: Customer provides the fabric for the binding unless otherwise arranged.

We offer four levels of binding services.

  1. Customer supplies pre-made binding and we stitch it onto the quilt ready for you to hand stitch the back. 10c per inch.
  2. We make the binding from supplied fabric and stitch it onto the quilt ready for you to hand stitch the back. 15c per inch.
  3. Customer supplies pre-made binding and we stitch it onto the quilt, then we hand-stitch the back to complete the binding. 45c per inch
  4. We make the binding and we stitch it onto the quilt, then we hand-stitch the back to complete the binding. 50c per inch.

Calculating binding price:

  1. Measure the width of your quilt in inches and multiply by two. Example: 50” x 2= 100 inches
  2. Measure the length of your quilt in inches and multiply by two. Example: 55” x 2= 110 inches
  3. Add both measurements together. Example: 100” + 110” = 210 inches
  4. Multiply inches by price. Example: 210” x 0.10 = $21.00

Threads:

We use Rasant or Signature threads. Rasant threads have a polyester core for strength with a cotton coating to prevent damage to the fabrics. This combination allows for fine result while retaining its strength. Signature threads is 100% cotton. Threads other than Rasant or signature is to be supplied by the customer.

Trimming:

  • Quilts are trimmed to the edge of the quilt as part of our service. If you require a different distance or you don’t wish to have it trimmed, please notify us.
  • All trimmings are returned to the customer with their quilt.

QUILT PREPARATION:

Your preparation of the quilt top is essential to help us give you the best possible outcome for your quilt.

Preparing your quilt top:

  • Make sure the quilt top has no embellishments such as buttons, charms, beads or sequins that may get caught in the machine foot (these can be stitched to the quilt after it has been quilted).
  • Trim all loose threads on the back of your quilt top as they can show through light fabrics.
  • Make sure any seams on the outside edge of your quilt are stay stitched to prevent seams from opening while your quilt is being quilted. Another way is to do a stay stich within the ¼” around the outer edge of the quilt top.
  • Press your quilt top, making sure the seams are either pressed open or to one side.
  • Do not baste or pin your quilt top.
  • Identify if your quilt is directional (write a note and safety pin it to your quilt in the appropriate place with this information).
  • Make sure your quilt has your name and contact details safety pinned to both your quilt top and the bag you are dropping it off in (this saves time on arrival).

Please note: We do not have a magic wand to fix your tucks, pleats and unwanted excess in the quilt top.

Preparing your quilt backing:

  • Backing must be a minimum of six inches larger than your quilt top an ALL four sides of your quilt. This allows for the clamps to hold the backing outwards to prevent tucks or pleats in the backing. Measure your quilt through the top, middle and bottom in both directions to get an accurate measurement.
  • If possible, have your backing supplier rip the backing instead of cutting it. This gives us a straight grain to use to pin the backing. A straight grain is very important for your backing (this is found by ripping the cut side of the backing). Having a straight grain prevents your quilt from warping in the quilting process. We have had customers disappointed with their backing purchases as they have lost up to twelve inches of their fabric to find a straight grain in the backing.
  • If you are having difficulty finding a backing fabric, we recommend Widebacks Australia (www.widebacks.com.au).
  • Backing should be 100% cotton, avoiding cotton sateen because the tight weave makes the quilting break the fibres rather than allowing the needle to go between the fibres (this applies to the quilt top as well as the backing).
    • Note: Using sheeting as backing can cause uneven stitches.
  • If piecing your backing please be aware of the whiff and the weft as they stretch differently and can cause distortion in your backing which can affect the finish of your quilt.

Wadding:

  • When providing your own wadding it needs to be a minimum of four inches larger than your quilt top on ALL four sides. Measure your quilt through the top, middle and bottom in both directions to get an accurate measurement.
  • Avoid laying your quilt on top on the wadding and cutting around it as this is not very accurate. It also leaves threads on your wadding.
  • Wadding can be purchased from us.

Postage:

Note: Please contact us before posting your quilt so we can help in the tracking process.

When posting your quilt, we recommend using registered mail by Australia Post. Returned postage, packaging and insurance is at the cost of the customer. We will contact you to confirm the arrival of your quilt and we will contact you prior to sending your quilt back to you.
